Practical Assessments for Better Veld Management
Understand the condition, grazing capacity and ecological potential of your property through practical field-based assessments.
Eco-Forage provides independent land resource consulting for cattle farmers, game farmers and landowners across Limpopo.
SERVICE 01
Veld Condition Assessment
A veld condition assessment provides an indication of the current state of the grazing resource.
The assessment considers the vegetation occurring on the property and relevant indicators of veld condition to better understand how historical and current management may have influenced the grazing resource.
This creates an important foundation for grazing-capacity calculations, stocking recommendations and future veld-management decisions.
A veld condition assessment can help determine:
- The current condition of grazing areas
- Important grass and woody species present
- Areas showing signs of grazing pressure or degradation
- Differences in condition between camps or sections
- General veld potential
- Management considerations for maintaining or improving veld condition
Suitable For: Cattle farms, game farms, mixed-use farms and properties where landowners require a clearer understanding of their existing grazing resource.
SERVICE 02
Grazing Capacity Determination
Grazing capacity refers to the ability of the veld to provide sufficient forage for grazing animals over time without causing unacceptable deterioration of the resource.
Eco-Forage assesses the property and uses the observed veld condition and relevant land characteristics to assist in determining an appropriate grazing capacity.
This gives farmers a stronger basis for determining how intensively a property should be stocked.
The assessment considers factors such as:
- Veld condition
- Available grazing
- Vegetation composition
- Property characteristics
- Grazing utilisation
- Existing veld pressures
- Relevant environmental conditions
Understanding grazing capacity can help reduce the risk of excessive grazing pressure while supporting sustainable utilisation of the property.
SERVICE 03
Proposed Stocking Rates
Knowing the size of a farm does not automatically tell you how many animals it should carry.
Two properties of similar size can have significantly different grazing potential because of differences in vegetation, veld condition, bush density, soil, rainfall and previous management.
Eco-Forage develops proposed stocking recommendations using the assessed grazing capacity and veld condition of the property.
Stocking recommendations can assist with:
- Planning cattle numbers
- Planning game numbers
- Evaluating existing animal pressure
- Considering increases or reductions in stock
- Balancing livestock requirements with available grazing
- Reducing pressure on vulnerable veld
The objective is to help align animal numbers more closely with the productive capacity of the available veld.
SERVICE 04
Habitat Analysis for Introducing New Game
Introducing a game species should involve more than determining whether an animal naturally occurs within the broader region.
The property itself must provide suitable habitat and resources.
Eco-Forage evaluates habitat characteristics to help determine whether a property may be suitable for proposed game species.
Habitat analysis may consider:
- Vegetation structure
- Grass and woody species composition
- Available forage
- Habitat type
- Grazing and browsing resources
- Existing animal utilisation
- Property size and characteristics
- Competition with existing livestock or wildlife
The assessment provides landowners with useful information before making potentially costly game-purchasing or stocking decisions.
SERVICE 05
Grazing Planning
Effective grazing management involves managing when, where and how animals utilise the available veld.
Eco-Forage develops practical grazing recommendations according to the condition of the veld, the grazing capacity, farm size and the layout of available grazing areas.
Grazing planning may include recommendations relating to:
- Distribution of grazing pressure
- Camp utilisation
- Resting of veld
- Rotation between grazing areas
- Animal numbers
- Seasonal considerations
- Areas requiring reduced utilisation
- Longer-term veld management
The aim is to use the available grazing resource effectively while maintaining its future productive potential.
SERVICE 06
Bush Encroachment Management Measures
Woody plant thickening can reduce the productive grass layer and make substantial areas of veld less accessible or less productive for grazing animals.
This is particularly relevant in many of Limpopo’s savanna and bushveld farming areas.
Eco-Forage assesses affected areas and provides practical management recommendations based on the conditions found on the property.
Assessment may consider:
- Woody plant density
- Species involved
- Severity of encroachment
- Impact on the grass layer
- Distribution across the property
- Priority areas for intervention
- Appropriate management considerations
Management recommendations are developed according to the specific property rather than applying the same approach to every farm.
SERVICE 07
Cattle & Game Veld Management Guidance
Livestock and game ultimately depend on the same land resource.
Where cattle and wildlife occur together, understanding the way different species utilise the vegetation becomes particularly important.
Eco-Forage provides practical veld-management guidance for farmers managing:
- Cattle
- Plains game
- Browsers
- Mixed game populations
- Combined cattle and wildlife systems
Recommendations are aimed at helping the landowner balance animal requirements with the condition and productive capacity of the veld.
SERVICE 08
Land Potential Recommendations
Different sections of the same property can have very different potential.
Vegetation, soil, terrain, water availability, previous use and ecological condition may all influence how an area should be managed.
Eco-Forage evaluates relevant land characteristics and provides recommendations regarding the potential and limitations of the property.
Land potential recommendations can support decisions relating to:
- Grazing use
- Game management
- Livestock management
- Veld improvement
- Areas requiring rehabilitation
- Bush management
- Future property planning
- Sustainable use of natural resources
OUR APPROACH
Practical. Independent. Field-Based.
Eco-Forage follows a straightforward approach:
Assess the current resource.
↓
Identify important veld and habitat factors.
↓
Determine the implications for grazing or game management.
↓
Develop practical recommendations.
↓
Help the farmer make informed management decisions.
IMPORTANT PRINCIPLE
Grazing Capacity Is Not Just a Number
A grazing-capacity figure should form part of a broader management process. Veld condition can change over time as a result of rainfall, drought, stocking pressure, grazing management, bush encroachment and other environmental influences. For this reason, veld and grazing management should be reviewed as conditions change.
The goal is not to maximise the number of animals on the property. The goal is to find a level of utilisation that supports production without progressively reducing the condition and productivity of the veld.
